Have you ever had Vietnamese and Mexican fusion food in Vancouver?
I didn’t know such cuisine existed until I stumbled upon VietMex in downtown Vancouver.
VietMex–formerly Saigon Venture restaurant–is located on Burrard Street between Drake and Pacific Street, just before you get onto the Burrad Street Bridge. I read on Yelp that the former owner sold the restaurant, but she still works in the kitchen.
From their website, they write “Vietmex Cuisine is your destination for Vietnamese and Mexican Cuisine. Located in downtown Vancouver, we offer a delicious fusion of Vietnamese meets Mexican dishes“.
They serve standard Vietnamese restaurant offerings including pho, banh mi, rice and vermicelli dishes. They have a combo that comes with a soup, 2 tacos and a pop for $12.50.
Their Mexican offerings are limited to just tacos. They have five kinds: pollo, carnitas, lemongrass chicken, beans and cheese, and beef.
They have a good selection of noodle soup including the vegetarian and seafood options.
They also renovated their interior. It is much brighter and cleaner looking than before.
A few weekends back my boyfriend and I went to Kamloops. My boyfriend was going there for a BC Speed Skating Association AGM and I decided to tag along because I’ll take any opportunity for a weekend getaway!
Originally we were going to go camping, but Kamloops was flooded from the heavy rains the week prior and the campsites were still wet and flooded.
Breakfast at Harold’s Famly Restaurant
We arrived in Kamloops on a Friday night, but we went straight to bed that night. The next morning, we went to Harold’s Family Resturant for breakfast because it was close to the motel we were staying in.
We got the double with sausage –Two farm fresh eggs, your way With bacon, sausage or ham andsausage skillet – Two scrambled eggs with chopped bacon or chopped sausages on top of hash browns, sautéed with onions, bell peppers and tomatoes. Topped with hollandaise sauce and served with toast.
It was some good, classic diner food.
After I dropped off my boyfriend at his AGM, I made my way to Reservoir Coffee because I had some time to kill before my appointment at the spa.
I had a latte and Stroop waffle , which were both great. They use Parallel 49 coffee at Reservoir and there were so many other menu items that I wanted to try but I was still really full from breakfast.

I made a goal of writing a blog post a week but life got to me. I started a new role in my company and it’s been kind of hectic.
Frankly, March has been a rough month for me. In addition to losing a close co-worker, I’ve been suffering from a sudden onset of migraines and it’s been affecting all aspects of my life. If you’re a migraine sufferer, I’d love to hear some tips or advice!
I try to focus on the positives although it’s natural for humans to ruminate on the negatives. So here is what I got up to in March, despite suffering migraines:
What I Ate: Brunch
If you follow me on Instagram, it’s no secret that I love brunch. Here are some brunch places I went to in March:

Lift Breakfast Bakery – I’ve passed by this place many times and finally had to chance to try it! We waited for 45 minutes but I thought the food was worth the wait!
West Village Cafe – I had work in Surrey and took the opportunity to try this cute cafe. I love everything about it–from the decor to the food. I highly recommend West Village Cafe if you are in Surrey.
Loco Ono x The Pawn Shop brunch – Loco Ono and the Pawn Shop team up every month to do a Hawaiin themed pop-up brunch. I tried it last month and really enjoyed the food.
Chef’s Playground Eatery– I’ve been following them on Instagram for a while and finally had the chance to try their brunch. The food was good and at a good price!

I can’t believe it is March already! For me, February was filled with celebrations and a lot of food. February was an eventful month and I’m looking forward to spring and spending more time outdoors in March.

Dine Out Vancouver
This year for Dine Out Vancouver, I only managed to go to two restaurants: Notch 8 and Black and Blue. I enjoyed both restaurants but preferred Notch 8’s menu more. I’m hoping to try more restaurants next year!
Hot Chocolate Festival
I was really excited for this year’s Hot Chocolate Festival because many of the participants were serving up white hot chocolate. I love anything white chocolate, especially white hot chocolate.
I didn’t realize that all the hot chocolates I tried this year were all white hot chocolate until the festival was over. I’ll have to have a variety of hot chocolates next year!

My favourite hot chocolate this year was the matcha white hot chocolate from Thomas Haas.
Valentine’s and Galentine’s Day
I’m not really big of Valentine’s day because I think that it’s too much of a commercial holiday and that everyday day should be Valentine’s day. I didn’t do anything with my boyfriend last year but we decided to do something this year.
We went to Diva at the Met and for Valentine’s day, they were serving a set 4-course menu. The menu included lobster bisque, seasame crusted tuna,crispy pork belly, beef tenderloin and chocolate praline bar. The food was really good, and the service and ambiance was great as well.
Every year, my friends and I do something for Galentine’s day. This year we decided to have a brunch at my friend Nora’s house. It was a potluck brunch and I brought homemade Belgian waffles. We had a great time eating brunch, drinking mimosa’s and celebrating our friendship.

La Forêt Bakery and Coffee is located in Burnaby near Metrotown, serving up espresso drinks, pastries, waffles, brunch and more. The decor can be described as airy, industrial-chic and filled with plants.
Back in January I finally made my way to La Forêt after seeing so many Instagram posts on it.
The decor at La Forêt is simply amazing. The general layout of the place is inviting and I like how the plants and lighting fixtures give the place character. It’s a great space to study or to catch up with friends.
After a short break from blogging and social media, I’m back! June started off a bit rocky; I was feeling very stressed and it was affecting other aspects of my life including my relationships and health. June did get better though and I’m thankful to all my friends and family that were there to help me de-stress. June was a month of biking, sunsets, celebrations and an unexpected vacation. Bobby Sox 50’s Diner is a retro-style diner in Maple Ridge. I love the retro decor at Bobby Sox’s; the leopard printed chairs, red upholstered booth seats, and diner memorabilia gives it an eclectic 50’s vibe.
I rarely go to Maple Ridge but I stumbled upon this place on my way to the Tulip Festival in Abbotsford. I have a soft spot for diners because my first job was waitressing at my uncle’s diner, so naturally I wanted to try Bobby Sox 50’s diner.
Cafe De L’orangerie is a friendly cafe nestled in Vancouver’s Marpole area that serves Japanese-style French food. Their menu is made up of popular Japanese dishes such as chicken karaage, spicy tuna sashimi and Japanese curry in addition to Japanese fusion dishes such as Hayashi rice and Doria. They also serve classic coffee, espresso and tea based drinks you would find in a cafe and delicious looking desserts. Cafe De L’orangerie’s menu reminds me Marulilu Cafe’s menu and I really enjoy this style of Japanese fusion cuisine.
This place has been on my list of places to try out for a while, so I already knew what I wanted before I even got to the restaurant. Find out what we ordered below!
Happy hump day! I can’t believe it’s already May; April was a month filled with gluttony, cherry blossoms, learning and rain. As April came to an end, so did my practicum at UBC Communications and Marketing. I’ve learned so much during my practicum and I’ll definitely miss the people the most.

One thing I’m going to miss about my practicum is being on UBC’s beautiful campus. I took this photo on the last week of my practicum.
Although I live in Vancouver, I’ve been spending more time in Richmond and discovering what Richmond has to offer. With the sunnier weather, I’ve also been trying to bike more often.
During my bike ride along Steveston Village, I had to stop for some frozen yogurt from Timothy’s Frozen Yogurt. I got my frozen yogurt with peaches and mango in it and it was delicious as always.
I love waffles; they’re one of my top foods but I don’t eat them as often anymore because I’ve been trying to eat healthier. The struggle is real when you love food but you also want to be healthier.
I came across the Kodiak Power Cakes at Costco and I was drawn to the high protein and whole grain ingredients in the product. I checked the ingredient list and it looked promising with ingredients such as whole grain wheat flour, whole grain oat flour, protein powder and dried honey as the sweetener. A chance to easily have high protein and low sugar waffles– I was sold!
There are 3 recipe options with varying levels of protein. You can use the mix to make waffles, pancakes, and muffins. Alternatively, the website says that you can be used as a healthy alternative in baking by substituting 1 cup flour with 1 cup Kodiak Cakes Mix and omit salt and baking powder.
